Best dad ever Father builds amazing spaceship under son's loft bed as surprise for his fifth birthday
17:08 GMT, 24 December 2012
A father in Maine has set the standard for dads across the world by transforming his son's bed into a life-like spaceship for his fifth birthday using discarded parts from a broadcasting suite and clever lighting.
Jeremiah Gorman, a teacher from Bangor and Reddit user, posted pictures of his engineering feat and the process by which he made the bed, winning admiration among other Redditors and fathers alike.
Lofting the mattress, Mr Gorman created a full operation panel underneath using a master control board from a television dumpster and old electronic equipment belonging to friends.
Power her up! Five-year-old Finn Gorman got the birthday surprise of a lifetime when his father transformed his bed into a spaceship
Devotion: Jeremiah Gorman assembled the spaceship's operation panel using a discarded television broadcasting master control board he found in a dumpster
The result is a bona fide spaceship, worthy of a at least a five-year-old flight navigator like his son Finn who was delighted with his birthday surprise.
Mr Gorman put together the giant control panel himself at home, adding gauges and buttons to the already sophisticated board.
Focus: Mr Gorman was given disused electrical fittings and gadgets by friends to add to the master board
Handiwork: The enterprising teacher from Bangor, Maine, said the idea to build the ship and loft his son's bed was his wife's
Mounting it on a stand, he then had to loft the bed on stilts, a decision that worried his wife until he proved it was no longer wobbly but stable and safe.
The History and Social Sciences educator then decorated his handiwork with some fairy lights wound around the slats of the bed frame to evoke that twilight, starry atmosphere of space for his son.
And above, next to Finn's mattress on the wall, he stuck two pretend portholes with pictures of what it might look like outside the window of a space craft.
Control stations: Finn's father even remembered to attach a NASA sticker to the panel
Dangerous: Sparks fly as Mr Gorman screws together and mounts the control panel
Up and away: The Gormans lofted Finn's bed on stilts to make way for his new naval command centre
Happy camper: Finn is delighted with his birthday gift
Showing off: Mum and dad take it in turns to play with Finn at the controls of his new space craft
Complete: Mr Gorman has received many compliments from fellow Reddit users after posting the pictures
A solitary spotlight lamp bent over the bed gave the finishing touch.
Replying to the many compliments on Reddit, Mr Gorman generously gave the credit to his wife, claiming the idea was all hers and that 'I just built things.'
One Redditor commended him saying: 'That's freaking awesome. You win at fatherhood.'
And from the pictures of Finn, it would seem he agrees. Wearing a special all in one space suit, he looks positively at home behind the controls of his amazing domestic spaceship.
