A woman has died after being struck by two cars near Buckingham Palace this morning.

She was pronounced dead shortly after the horrific hit-and-run at 2.20am at The Mall in central London, Scotland Yard said.

The driver of the second car, a blue Mercedes E-Class, drove off from the incident.

Police later traced the vehicle to an address in Hendon, north London, and arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop. He remains in custody.

A police spokesman said inquiries are under way to identify the woman, who is described as of heavy build with collar-length dark brown hair.

'Police had markers on the road and were looking at the scene.

'There looked like there were small pieces of car left on the road.

Investigation Unit based at Catford are investigating the fatal
collision and police are appealing for witnesses.

The London Ambulance Service attended the incident and a spokesman said: 'We were called just before 2.20am to reports of a road traffic collision on The Mall and sent an ambulance crew, two responders in cars, an officer and a doctor to the scene.

'Our first staff arrived within three minutes.

'Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the patient, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.'
