Pictured: Incredible 'tsunami' of clouds roll over mountain top to engulf city
17:28 GMT, 16 December 2012
This is the dramatic moment a city in Switzerland looks like it is about to be engulfed by a giant tsunami – although the apparent tidal wave is actually just thick clouds rolling in over a mountain range.
As thousands of people went about their everyday business in Geneva, behind them a mammoth tsunami appeared to be about to tear through the city.
But the spectacular scene was really just an optical illusion caused by clouds sweeping across the Saleve mountain range, which overlooks the city, on December 5 this year.
Breath-taking: The dramatic moment a city in Switzerland appears to be in danger of a giant crashing wave
The surreal moment was captured by keen photographer Alex Teuscher, from New York, USA, as part of his project '365', where he will capture a new photo every day for a year.
Mr Teuscher, 30, said: 'I had been on a walk to take my picture for the day when I noticed the clouds sweeping over the mountains – it was an interesting effect to say the least.
'In a word it was epic. I felt extremely lucky to be at the right place at exactly the right time to capture this amazing moment.
'I have heard of similar things happening elsewhere but have personally never seen anything like it myself before. It looked just like a tsunami coming in over the city.
'I took the picture as part of my project 365 in which I take a new photo every day over the course of 365 days. It's quite difficult but at the same time a very rewarding.
'I look forward to looking back on the images, and my growth as a photographer, at the end of it. I hope they are all as stunning as this shot.'
Stunning: A rainbow is formed next to the famous water fountain (Jet
d'eau) in front of a lighthouse of the Geneva's harbour, in Geneva,
The ‘tsunami cloud’ effect is believed to be caused when a fast-moving layer of fluid or air washes over a slower, thicker layer – creating a wispy wave effect.
Meanwhile, in another stunning image to emerge from the city today, a vibrant rainbow was captured on film next to the iconic water fountain Jet d'eau, in front of the lighthouse.
