Since the first
episode was screened in 2010, Downton Abbey
has rapidly become a global televisual phenomenon which has put its filming location, the tiny Oxfordshire village of Bampton, firmly on the map.

Surprisingly, house prices have yet to go through the roof and a three-bedroom cottage in the village where residents star as extras in the show and mingle openly with the cast, can still be snapped up for 300,000. Although this is expected to change once the Christmas Special and fourth series get underway.

Already the village of Highclere, on the Hampshire Berkshire borders where the first series was filmed, has felt the effects of the international television exposure.

Downton Abbey's outdoor shots are mostly filmed in Bampton, a village in Oxfordshire, England, located in the Thames Valley about 4.5 miles (7.2 km) southwest of Witney

Stephen Wolfenden, director for Oxfordshire at County Homesearch, said: 'I know of a couple from California who got jobs in West Berkshire and wanted to live as close to Highclere as possible just because they fell in love with the programme in California.

'Now apparently all their friends can't wait to come and visit.

'Bampton will also see the benefits of this exposure. It won't be instant, but in the medium to long term it could well become a good place to invest in property.

'At the moment it has been effected more by tourism but as this develops and the fourth series takes off, things will change.

'And of course, as prices in the nearby Cotswolds continue to go up, villages nearby like Bampton will also rise.'

Bampton was singled out as the ideal location for Downton, thanks to its proximity to London and the fact it is so well-preserved.

The show's
producer
Nigel Marchant once said in the local press: 'Bampton is perfect because
it is so well preserved, and you hardly need to do anything in terms of
alterations.
